Tonight the first Ignite event in Orlando took place, and to put it lightly, it was freaking awesome.
The idea of an Ignite event is that each presenter gets 5 minutes to speak, using just 20 slides that rotate every 15 seconds. These have been held all over the world, but never before in the south eastern United States, let alone Orlando. This creates a really interesting dynamic, and makes the talks very interesting and varied. From what I understand, this will be an event that’s held every month, and although this first one was very tech centric, there were some non-tech talks that were very fascinating as well (including Matthew Williams talk about how to make beer). I personally would like to see more talks about art and design, so perhaps I’ll have to submit a talk for the next one.
I’m constantly amazed by the strength of Orlando tech. The fact that we have so many great user groups, two BarCamps behind us, another BarCamp coming up, and now this event, really speaks to the character of Orlando’s community. 
Update: As Eric and Ignite pointed out in the comments, Ignite Orlando is NOT going to happen every month. This was just a rumor spread by a little birdy… Or Twitter… Awesome event though, can’t wait for the next one!

Is this event free? I’d like to go see what this is all about. Can you talk about anything or is it supposed to be “tech centric?”

This first one was pretty tech centric, but they encourage talks about anything, so hopefully we’ll get a little bit more variety at the next one.
Thanks so much for your great write up! I had heard rumors come back to me about this going to happen every month and quite frankly, I do not think I can pull that off. It will happen at least twice a year and maybe once every 3 months. I had only planned the one event and was going to wait on the community acceptance to decide how often to do it. There is much involved. Yes we would love to bring more art, theatre and more to this event. It just happened that we all travel in the same tech circles and used the same mailing list to market the event. Anyways, thanks again!
